Every boy at St Edward’s is part of one of four Houses: Shanahan (Blue), Spillane (Red), Knights (Green) or Doolan (White).
These Houses date back to the early days of the College and carry the traditions, colours and crest that link past, present and future. Through the year, Houses compete in sport, service, academics and spirit-based challenges, earning points that reflect effort, growth and contribution, not just results. Through this system, students learn leadership, teamwork, and belonging in a community that supports each individual journey.
The House System at St Edward’s serves multiple purposes. It fosters connection across years, enabling younger students to feel supported and older students to lead. It provides an ongoing structure for friendly competition, giving meaning to effort in sport, arts, service and academics. Fundamentally, it reinforces our values of community, respect and service — helping boys not only succeed but belong.
Established in honour of Brother John Shanahan who shaped the early years of the College, Shanahan stands for honesty, perseverance and character.
Named in tribute to Brother Tom Spillane, this House champions boldness, commitment and standing up for what’s right.
Knights honours those who lead quietly, serve genuinely and uphold community values through action and example.
Reflecting the legacy of Brother Doolan, this House emphasises collaboration, collective effort and lifting others as you rise.
The House System has been a cornerstone of life at St Edward’s for decades, embedded in our culture and identity. Each Home Room is attached to a House, ensuring students carry their House membership through Year 7 to Year 12. Points are collected throughout the year in sport, public speaking, service and behaviour categories — leading to the awarding of the House Cup.
