numerical skills to real life

Mathematics

Students engage with Mathematics as a way of exploring the world around them.

Mathematics Program
Through our teaching we aim to teach students logical thinking, quantitative thinking, spatial thinking, generalised representation of relationships.

Students at St Edward’s are encouraged to engage with Mathematics as a way of exploring the world around them, be it mathematics in nature or art, applying numerical skills to real life situations such as the inequitable distribution of wealth around the world and to identify the powerful role of mathematics in the development of civilisation, modern industry, science and technology.

“Yet the human mind invented mathematics in order to understand creation; but if nature is really structured with a mathematical language and mathematics invented by man can manage to understand it, this demonstrates something extraordinary.” Pope Benedict XVI (Address to young people of the Diocese of Rome, 6 April 2006).

The New South Wales syllabuses for the Australian Mathematics curriculum content contains the following strands:

Working Mathematically

Students develop understanding and fluency in mathematics through inquiry, exploring and connecting mathematical concepts, choosing and applying problem-solving skills and mathematical techniques, communication and reasoning

Number and Algebra

Students develop efficient strategies for numerical calculation, recognise patterns, describe relationships and apply algebraic techniques and generalisation

Measurement and Geometry

Students identify, visualise and quantify measures and the attributes of shapes and objects, and explore measurement concepts and geometric relationships, applying formulas, strategies and geometric reasoning in the solution of problems.

Statistics and Probability

Students collect, represent, analyse, interpret and evaluate data, assign and use probabilities, and make sound judgements
